The short answer

When a VPN says “no logs,” audits are the receipts. NordVPN leads with six independent no-logs audits (PwC + Deloitte). Proton VPN is the transparency runner-up with five yearly public audits. Everyone else is playing catch-up — and any provider with zero audits shouldn't be trusted with your traffic, no matter how fast it is.

RankedTrue 2026 Audit Awards

Awarded purely from verified independent audit records — no voting, no sponsors.

Most audited
NordVPN. Six independent no-logs audits — PwC (2018, 2020) and Deloitte (2022–2025, latest issued Dec 2025). Nobody else comes close on count.
Most transparent
Proton VPN. A fresh public audit report every year from 2022 to 2026, plus open-source apps and a genuinely free tier — transparency as a habit, not a press release.
Best real-world evidence
PIA. Its no-logs claim survived two FBI subpoenas — in 2016 and 2018 there was simply nothing to hand over. No audit simulates a court order.

How to read an audit (30-second version)

Questions, answered

What is a no-logs audit?

An independent firm (Deloitte, PwC, KPMG, Cure53, Securitum) examines the VPN's servers, code, and processes to verify it actually doesn't store activity logs — then publishes a report. It's the difference between 'trust us' and 'check our work.'

Does an audit guarantee privacy?

No — it verifies a point in time. But providers that submit to repeated audits, by Big Four firms, with public reports, are meaningfully more trustworthy than providers with marketing claims alone. Look for recency and repetition, not just a single old audit.

Why do you rank audits above speed?

Because a fast VPN that logs is a surveillance tool. Speed is measurable by anyone; trust isn't — audits are the only independent check on the core promise every VPN makes.
