Privacy software · Updated October 2026Proton Mail alternatives (2026): four audited picks
The short answer
Nobody needs to leave Proton Mail — it's genuinely good. But four credible reasons to switch exist: price (Tuta and Posteo are cheaper), metadata (Proton's OpenPGP leaves subject lines unencrypted; Tuta encrypts them), jurisdiction (you'd rather be under GDPR in Germany or the Netherlands than Swiss law), or simplicity (you don't want a VPN and Drive bundled with your inbox). The four alternatives worth your attention: StartMail for PGP that works with any mail app, Tuta for the best-value encrypted inbox, Mailfence for a full productivity suite, and Posteo for the cheapest paid private email on earth.
These are launch assessments from published pricing, policies, and feature documentation — not lab scores. Prices below are from official pricing pages checked October 2026 and can change at renewal. Verify at checkout.
The four, side by side
| StartMail | Tuta | Mailfence | Posteo | |

| Affiliate status | Paying — verified: 100% of year-1 net, 45-day cookie, direct | $0 — referral credits never pay out as cash | Paying — rate unpublished, disclosed on approval | $0 — no program exists |

The picks, one by one
1. StartMail — the PGP purist's pick (and ours)
From the Netherlands and the team behind Startpage, StartMail is the only alternative here that gives you PGP end-to-end encryption with full IMAP/SMTP support — Thunderbird, Apple Mail, Outlook, whatever you already use. Personal is $59.88/year with 20 GB, unlimited aliases, and custom domains; Business is $83.88/year. There's no free tier (7-day trial), which is arguably a feature: no free tier means no data-harvesting incentive. Its program pays 100% of first-year net sales value on a 45-day cookie and explicitly recruits review sites — the honest engine behind this page.
2. Tuta — the best-value encrypted inbox
Germany's answer to Proton: Revolutionary at €36/year buys 20 GB, 15 addresses, and 3 custom domains — more of everything than Proton's $47.88/year Mail Plus. Its AES/RSA-based encryption covers subject lines, which Proton's OpenPGP doesn't, and the free tier (1 GB, unlimited folders, full-text search) is the most functional in the category. The catch: no IMAP or Bridge — you use Tuta's own apps. We earn nothing when you pick Tuta; its referral credits don't pay out. It's here because it's good, not because it pays.

3. Mailfence — the full-suite alternative
Based in Belgium, Mailfence is the closest thing to a private Google Workspace here: email plus calendar, contacts, documents, and groups, with OpenPGP encryption and digital signatures that interoperate with third-party clients. Paid plans start from around €2.50/month on the Entry tier; a 500 MB-email free tier lets you try before paying. Two honest caveats: the code isn't open source, and the company logs IP addresses. Its affiliate program exists and pays on upgrades — even free-to-paid conversions — but the commission rate is unpublished until you're approved.
4. Posteo — the cheapest paid private email
€1/month. That's the whole pitch, and it's a strong one: no free tier, no investors, no affiliate program — Posteo is financed entirely by account fees, which is exactly why it has no incentive to mine your data. You get a no-frills German inbox under GDPR. If you want encryption beyond TLS, aliases galore, or an ecosystem, look at Tuta or StartMail instead. But for twelve euros a year of private email, nothing touches it.
Why Proton Mail itself isn't ranked
It's the baseline everything else is measured against, not an oversight. Proton Mail usually wins head-to-heads on merit — our Proton vs Tuta comparison gives Proton the apps and ecosystem rounds. Its partner program pays 25% on Business plans only (verified Oct 2026) — consumer Mail Plus earns $0 under standard terms, so we don't promise it; we're pursuing the partner application anyway in case custom terms are offered. The providers above are covered with the same honesty whether or not they pay us — which is the entire point of the brand.
